Dr. Sachie Noguchi: Yes, next question is when was the first time you met Tsunoda sensei and what was it?
Professor de Bary: I think it was in class. And I think that has to do with the other question of his teaching method. Because he would come to class having filled a whole blackboard with the terms in Chinese or Japanese that he was going to speak to. And then that blackboard was set up in this small room where Professor Keene and I, and a few other students came in around a table and listened to him speak to the ideas, the terms, the concepts that he had written in Chinese and Japanese on this blackboard. The other thing, when he came into the room, he always carried a great many books. Now he did not read from those books. What he did was to make us aware of how much more there was in these Japanese textbooks even, not just about Japanese things, but the Chinese sources are much of Japanese Buddhism, or Japanese Neo-Confucianism you see? So that is how I became introduced to the major Japanese scholars of the day who were also scholars of Chinese things. That was something that I could not get anywhere else, no matter where. I got it through Tsunoda sensei because he was an educated man, an educated librarian. And because he had some sense of what was humanly relevant based upon his broad knowledge of many aspects of East Asian thought and religion. But from his own background, he was primarily identified with Jodo Shin-Shu Buddhism, but he was not limited to that. So he gave me and Donald Keene and a few others, very, very broad introduction to these things that served the purposes, I was intent on that is, how I could bring this into a core curriculum. Civilization broadly speaking, or the humanities broadly speaking.
Now one of your questions refers to the so-called Anthologies and you are familiar with those texts?
