While studying at Keio Gijuku (now Keio University) in Tokyo, his talent was recognized by the school's founder Fukuzawa Yukichi, through whose recommendation he entered the Yubin hochi shinbun in 1875. He is noted for his debates, as its chief editor, with Fukuchi Ochi of the Tokyo nichinichi shinbun in favor of freedom and popular rights and establishment of a parliament.
