Science & Engineering Library User Guide


Eligibility

  • Undergraduate students, graduate students, and non-degree students
  • Faculty and staff (full-time faculty and staff, visiting faculty, part-time lecturer, assistant professors, research associates, etc.)
  • Students from Waseda University Senior/Junior High School and affiliated high schools
  • Library card holders

  • Users from the universities under cooperative agreement with Waseda (Keio University, Doshisha University)
  • Special auditing students and exchange students under cooperative agreement universities with Waseda
  • Visitors with a letter of introduction issued by other institutions: See  “Guide for Visitors” (In Japanese Only)

Science and Engineering Library is not open to the public. Please take the predetermined procedure in your institution or a public library.

Guide to entering the library

  • To enter the library
  • Please show your Student ID Faculty/Staff ID or Library Card.
  • Students from affiliated high schools, Alumni, and Visitors must show their ID card or the letter of introduction at the counter and complete a procedure.
  • Users are not allowed to bring their bags and other belongings (including second bags, files, etc) into the library. Store your belongings in the locker.
  • Users wishing to bring in privately-owned books and periodicals or documents that are currently checked out are requested to present them to the staff at the counter where you will be issued a slip for each book.
  • When you exit, please bring back the slips showing your books at the counter.
  • To use lockers
  • Lockers are available only for library users during the service hours.
  • A 100 yen coin is required to lock the locker. The coin will be returned after use.

Be sure to lock your locker to prevent theft.
Bills can be exchanged for coins at the counter.

Borrowing

To borrow books, please bring books to the counter with student ID, Faculty/staff ID, or library card. Borrowing service is available 30 minutes before the closing time.

  • The number of books is the total number of books that can be borrowed at one time from all Waseda University Libraries managed under the common loan rules.
  • Periodicals cannot be checked out.

Returning books

Return books before the due date at the check-in counter or the Book Drop at the entrance.
Books deposited in the Book Drop will be processed on the following business day.
  • When books are not returned by the due date, a penalty of 1 point per day per book will be applied.
  • After reaching the maximum penalty points shown in the above chart, the specified suspension period will apply and the user will be unable to borrow books during the period at any library.
  • A reminder to return books will be sent via e-mail on the 1st, 7th, 14th and 30th day after the due date.
  • The suspension period will apply from the day that the third reminder notice is sent; however, if the book is returned before reaching the maximum penalty points, the suspension will be lifted.
  • When a reservation is made for a book that has passed the due date, the user in possession of the overdue book will be unable to borrow any more books until the overdue book is returned.


Making copies

  • Please respect the copyright law of Japan when making photocopies.
    For the purpose of your own research, a user can make a single copy less than half of a work.
    See material can be copied for details.
    Copy machines cannot be used to make copies of non-library materials.
  • Insert cash or a copy card.
  • Copy machines are available until 30 minutes before closing time.

How to get copy cards

  • Copy cards can be purchased from the vending machine, but a receipt is not issued.
  • You can purchase copy cards by the school fund at the office of Science & Engineering Library. (Mon-Fri. 9:00-17:00).
    The seal of the person charged is required. Please clarify the budget item of expenditure.
  • Non-Waseda user should ask at the information desk.

How to get the material from non-Waseda libraries


Purchase requests

Purchase requests are accepted for books not owned by the Science & Engineering Library. Online requests are accepted.
We cannot accept all of the requests because of the budget limitation. Notification will be sent via e-mail within 10 days only if the book will be purchased. When the requested book become available, notification will be sent to you via e-mail and the book will be held at the check-out counter for 7 days.


Notice

Reminder for returns

  • The Library system automatically sends you reminder notice via e-mail on the 1st, 7th, 14th and 30th day after the due date.
  • If a reminder for books you have returned comes, please check “View Your Records” function of WINE or inquire at the counter.

Manners to use libraries
  • Please keep valuables with you at all times.
  • You are responsible for all your belongings.
  • Please make sure to lock the locker when you use it.
  • No smoking on the premises.
  • Chatting, eating and talking on mobile phones are prohibited. (*Only drinking is permitted in some designated area.)
  • Please handle all library materials with care and be careful not to damage them or get them wet.
  • Strict measures will be taken for malicious violations such as stealing library books, writing, underlining and marking library material, or tearing pages out of books.
  • In the event of loss or damage to library books, please report to the counter immediately. You may be asked to compensate the library for the loss or damage. See Liability for Lost or Damaged Books
