内  容  英国リバプールの裕福な家庭に生まれたCharles Booth (1840-1916)は、兄と共に海運業に従事する一方で、当時の社会問題にも深く関心を抱いていた。事業に成功した彼は、1875年にロンドンに移住し本格的な社会調査を開始、Beatrice Webb等の優れた助手と共に、労働者、企業家等にアンケートとインタビューを行い、その成果を『Life and labour of people in London』(1891-1903)として著した。
 その手法は、事実を実証的な数字に置き換え、問題の所在のみならず因果関係にも注目し、実践活動による問題解決を図るものである。これは社会調査を社会科学の実証方法として確立させ、後年の社会科学研究に階層分析法として大きな影響を与えた。さらにこれが英国の福祉政策を実現する契機となった。
 この資料は上記『Life and labour of...』作成の為に調査収集したデータをマイクロ化したもので、統計・筆写原稿・聞き取り調査記録・アンケート等が含まれ、全体で6部構成となっている。その主たる内容は以下のとおりである。
